World Water Day is celebrated annually on March 22 to highlight the importance of freshwater resources and promote sustainable management. This Day provides an opportunity to learn more about water-related issues, be inspired to share them with others, and take action to change the situation for the better.
Water is the main building block of life. Water is not only essential to quench thirst or protect health, it is vital to create jobs and support economic, social and human development. According to the latest World Water Report, 3.6 billion people worldwide, or about half of the world’s population, live in water-stressed areas for at least one month a year. In 2050, this figure may grow to over 5 billion people. Current global freshwater use is approaching a maximum threshold for sustainability, and this delicate balance actually only masks serious local and regional imbalances.
The publication of the annual World Water Report coincides with World Water Day to provide decision-makers with the tools to develop and implement sustainable water policies. UNESCO works year round to build a scientific knowledge base that can help countries manage their water resources in a sustainable manner through the International Hydrological Program (IHP) and numerous Water Centers and Chairs around the world.
The United Nations General Assembly adopted resolution A / RES / 47/193 (link is external) of 22 December 1992, in which it proclaimed 22 March as World Water Day. This Day has been celebrated annually since 1993, in accordance with the recommendations of the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) contained in chapter 18 (Freshwater) of Agenda 21. States were encouraged to dedicate the Day, in accordance with their national context, to specific activities such as promoting public awareness through the publication and distribution of documentaries and the organization of conferences, round tables, seminars and exhibitions on water conservation and development.
