UN Unanimously Adopts Resolution on Turkmenistan’s Permanent Neutrality

The United Nations General Assembly has unanimously passed the resolution “Permanent Neutrality of Turkmenistan,” reaffirming the country’s unique status in international diplomacy. This landmark decision was made on March 21, 2025, during the 61st plenary session of the 79th UN General Assembly as part of discussions on Peacebuilding and Peacekeeping.

In her address to the Assembly, Aksoltan Atayeva, Turkmenistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN, emphasized that neutrality remains the cornerstone of the country’s foreign policy. She highlighted that since the UN first recognized Turkmenistan’s neutral status on December 12, 1995, the nation has actively applied this principle as a strategic tool for preventive diplomacy at both regional and global levels.

The newly adopted resolution encourages the use of neutral states’ territories for peace negotiations, reinforcing Turkmenistan’s commitment to global conflict resolution and diplomacy.

At Turkmenistan’s initiative, the UN General Assembly designated December 12 as International Neutrality Day in 2017. Additionally, the UN system includes a Group of Friends of Neutrality, and this year marks a series of events held under the International Year of Peace and Trust.
