The Ashgabat Open 2024, an international tennis tournament for boys and girls under 14, officially opened today in Turkmenistan’s capital, Ashgabat. The event, featuring athletes from 12 countries across Europe and Asia, highlights the city’s transformation into a prominent international sports hub. Turkmenistan has seen a significant boost in sports achievements, with national athletes winning 538 medals in 161 international competitions this year alone, including 174 gold medals. The country has also hosted major events such as the 2017 Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games, the “Amul-Hazar” motor rally, and the World Weightlifting Championship.
The Tennis Federation of Turkmenistan has been recognized by the Asian Tennis Federation for its role in organizing successful events, including the Central Asian Team Championship for U12 players. Ashgabat’s Olympic Village, built to world standards, is the venue for this tournament and has become a key site for international competitions.
The opening ceremony featured a speech by President Serdar Berdimuhamedov, who emphasized the importance of sports in fostering peace and international cooperation. The event also included performances by local cultural groups and the traditional kushtdepdi dance, recognized by UNESCO as part of the world’s intangible cultural heritage.
