World Bicycle Day, celebrated on June 3, was proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in April 2018. 56 states became co-authors of the document. And representatives of Turkmenistan came up with the initiative to establish this international date.
Regular, moderate-intensity physical activity, such as walking, cycling, or exercising, has significant health benefits. At any age, the benefits of being physically active outweigh the potential harm, such as from accidents. By being more active throughout the day in relatively simple ways, people can reach the recommended activity levels quite easily.
World Bicycle Day draws attention to the benefits of using a bicycle – a simple, affordable, clean and environmentally friendly means of transportation. Bicycling helps clean the air and reduce congestion, and makes education, health care and other social services more accessible to the most vulnerable. A sustainable transport system that promotes economic growth, reduces inequality, and at the same time supports the fight against climate change is critical to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.
Turkmenistan pays great attention to cycling. Every year, under the leadership of the President of Turkmenistan, marathons are held in which students of our country’s universities take part. This is another proof that sport is an integral part of the state policy in Turkmenistan.
