Another UN office will be opened in Turkmenistan – the Office for Project Services (UNOPS). This was announced at the meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers held on Friday, The Neutral Turkmenistan newspaper reported.
The suggestion to open a specialized structure of the United Nations in our country came from the UN Deputy Secretary General, UNOPS Executive Director in order to widen bilateral partnership, said Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign affairs Rashid Meredov.
Therefore to the head of the Ministry of Foreign affairs, a project on partnership in the field of healthcare has been submitted to Turkmenistan for review. The project is estimated to be realized jointly with the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS).
Having heard the report, President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov noted with gratification the productive character of the partnership with the UN, which has reached a qualitatively new level in recent years.
Having approved the project and the suggestion to open a representative office of another UN specialized structure in our country, submitted for review by the Turkmen side, the head of the state instructed to lead appropriate work in this trend.
The United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) is an operational arm of the United Nations, dedicated to implementing projects for the United Nations System, international financial institutions, governments and other partners around the world. The organization’s global headquarters is located on the UN City campus in Copenhagen, Denmark.
Today, Turkmenistan is a member of 11 UN structural units. Ashgabat hosts the UN Regional Center for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia, the Office of the UN Resident Coordinator, the UN Development Program Resident Representative, as well as the offices of the UN Children’s Fund, the UN Population Fund, the UN Office on Drugs and Crime, the World Health Organization, the International Organization on Migration.
