Human Rights Day is celebrated on December 10 – it was on this day in 1948 that the General Assembly of the United Nations adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights – a landmark document that proclaimed the inalienable rights inherent in every person, regardless of race, color, sex, language , religion, political or other convictions, national or social origin, property, class or other status. The Declaration is being translated more often than any other document in the world: its text exists in more than 500 languages.
This year, Human Rights Day is dedicated to the theme «Equality» and Article 1 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights – «All people are born free and equal in their dignity and rights.»
The principles of equality and non-discrimination are central to the field of human rights. The theme of equality is consistent with the 2030 Agenda and with the UN Leave No One Approach: Equality and Non-Discrimination as the Basis for Sustainable Development – A Common Framework for Action. They include combating deep-rooted forms of discrimination that affect the most vulnerable groups and finding appropriate solutions.
Equality, inclusion and non-discrimination, or in other words, a human rights-based approach to development, is the best way to reduce inequality and move forward towards the 2030 Agenda.
