International Day of persons with disabilities

Every year on December 3, the International Day of Persons with Disabilities is celebrated around the world. International Day of Persons with Disabilities mobilizes public support to address critical issues related to the integration of people with disabilities. Its goal is to promote the rights of persons with disabilities in all spheres of public life, as well as to draw the attention of the general public to the problems of persons with disabilities.

In December 2006, the UN General Assembly adopted the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. It is a human rights document aimed at social development. The convention, which entered into force in May 2008, combines human rights with the potential for development. The document discusses the basic principles and characteristics of persons who can be considered persons with disabilities.

Persons with disabilities are persons with persistent physical, mental, intellectual or sensory impairments that, when interacting with various barriers, may interfere with their full and effective participation in society on an equal basis with others.

“It is very important for every civilized state that all its citizens have equal opportunities, rights and freedoms, and that people who require special attention do not feel thrown to the sidelines of life. It is important to provide them with the opportunity to move freely, study, work, communicate, participate in public and political life.

I urge all countries to fully implement the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, increase accessibility, and dismantle legal, social, economic and other barriers with the active involvement of persons with disabilities and their representative organizations.”
