The UI GreenMetric World University Rankings were established by Universitas Indonesia in 2010 to evaluate universities’ contributions to environmental sustainability. In 2024, 1,477 universities from 95 countries participated.
The rankings are based on six criteria: Setting and Infrastructure; Energy and Climate Change; Waste Management; Water Management; Eco-Friendly Transportation; and Education and Research.
Over the past two years, the number of Turkmen universities in the rankings has grown significantly. The Telecommunications and Informatics Institute was the first from Turkmenistan to be ranked in 2021, followed by Oguz Han Engineering and Technology University and the Institute of Engineering, Technical and Transport Communications in 2022.
By 2023, eight Turkmen universities had made the rankings, and this year the number increased to eleven.
This accomplishment underscores Turkmenistan’s commitment to addressing global challenges related to sustainability and environmental protection. It reflects the nation’s active participation in international agreements focused on sustainable development and the efficient use of natural resources.
Moreover, the success of Turkmen universities in the UI GreenMetric rankings and other prestigious international assessments highlights the progress made in raising the standard of the national education system and integrating Turkmen universities into the global higher education community.
