Ashgabat is the city of New Sports Opportunities

On May 24, 2024, during a meeting of the Council of Governments of the Heads of the CIS, it was announced that Ashgabat has been designated as the City of New Sports Opportunities of the Commonwealth. The heads of government also tasked the Council for Physical Culture and Sports with creating a draft plan of events for 2024-2025 to support this initiative.

It’s important to note that Turkmenistan has a history of initiating and hosting major sporting events. For example, in 2017, the V Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games were successfully held in Ashgabat. Additionally, in 2018, Turkmenistan proposed the establishment of World Bicycle Day at the UN General Assembly, which is now celebrated annually on June 3.

The decision to declare Ashgabat as a city of new sports opportunities for the Commonwealth by the Council of Heads of Government of the CIS reflects the growing interest of Commonwealth partners in recent years.
