Ashgabat, Turkmenistan December 23, 2020 – The United Nations office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) organized an online training on the application of the Disaster Resilience Assessment tool, for the relevant departments and services of the administration of the Ashgabat city. The support for the disaster resilience assessment is part of the UNDRR regional Initiative “Strengthening disaster resilience and accelerating implementation of Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction in Central Asia 2019-2022” funded by the European Union.
The goal of the training was to introduce the Disaster Resilience Assessment tool (Scorecard) that will allow local government to review and assess the degree of preparedness of the city of Ashgabat to disasters. The Scorecard tool is structured around UNDRR’s Ten Essentials for Making Cities Resilient and offers the preliminary and detailed assessment. Over 870 cities around the world have reported using the Disaster Resilience Scorecard and proved its effectiveness.
Representatives of the Main Department for civil defense and rescue operations of Ministry of Defense and from city administration departments responsible for emergency situations, environmental protection, communal services, education, energy, transport, and other units participated in the workshop. The participants discussed and reviewed the Disaster Resilience Scorecard; each department analyzed its role as contributing agency against the various parameters and criteria.
With the Disaster Resilience Scorecard, the local government will be able to conduct assessment of the resilience of the Ashgabat city to threats and hazards, analyze the findings, and develop the city roadmap for disaster risk reduction that will accelerate the progress of resilience building at the local level and bring the Ashgabat city on to the resilience pathway towards achieving the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction and the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030.
