On February 2, 2017, the United Nations General Assembly decided that December 12 would be known as International Neutrality Day. This shows that our country is well-respected in the world and is recognized for its important role in making sure there is peace, safety, and development in the region and the world.
The idea to create this event came from the leader of our country, Hero Arkadag, during a conference in Turkmenistan’s capital on December 12, 2015. This was the same day we celebrated our country’s 20th anniversary of being a neutral country. The people at the forum in Ashgabat, along with many important guests, all agreed with and supported this idea. This was later shown in the summary report of the conference.
Our country has shown it is a good partner to the UN and is committed to fulfilling its promises. We are working with other countries to make peace, security, and cooperation better in Central Asia. Turkmenistan is good at dealing with this kind of situation. This is shown by the talks they had in the 90s to help solve conflicts in Tajikistan and Afghanistan, which were organized by the UN. Today, it is important to have experience in dealing with important issues like making peace in Afghanistan, helping countries in the region get rid of weapons, finding fair ways to use water and energy, making sure the environment is healthy, and dealing with current challenges and threats.
The UN Regional Centre for Preventative Diplomacy for Central Asia, which opened in Turkmenistan’s capital in December 2017, plays a key role in achieving these goals.
Turkmenistan shows that it follows the rules of international law and it values peace and being friendly with other countries.
