International Day of Women and Girls in Science

“We need to encourage and support girls and women to reach their full potential as researchers and innovators.”

.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.

On February 11, the International Day of Women and Girls in Science is celebrated annually, starting from 2016, according to the UN decision. The background of the appearance of a new holiday is as follows. On December 20, 2013, the UN General Assembly adopted the resolution “Science, Technology and Innovation for Development”, which recognized equal and full access of women and girls of any age to the achievements and development of science, technology and innovation as a guarantee of gender equality in this area. And two years later, at the next plenary session of the General Assembly, a resolution (70/212) was adopted proclaiming February 11 as the International Day of Women and Girls in Science. The establishment of the new date was another milestone step in the implementation of the plan for the development of society until 2030, known as the UN General Assembly Resolution “Transforming our World: the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development”. The main goal of the Resolution is to achieve qualitative changes in the process of involving women and girls in the scientific field. Although over the past 15 years, the world community has achieved significant success in this matter, but women and girls still face restrictions in this area. The first celebration of the Day took place on February 11, 2016 and was marked by the holding of the forum at the UN headquarters. The annual celebration of this day is designed to attract additional attention to the problem of women’s participation in the scientific field, especially to celebrate the achievements in science, technology and innovation made by women and girls. The mention in the name of the holiday not only of women, but also of girls, is aimed at updating the topic of participation in scientific communities, circles and other associations of the scientific profile of the school period, not only boys, but also girls, whose participation in them is also noticeably lower. In addition, the participants of the events within the framework of the celebration of the new International Day pay attention to the work of educators and teachers in school and preschool education institutions, where the principles of gender equality should be taken into account.

In its Resolution, the UN appeals not only to States and their governments, but also to international organizations and foundations, civil society structures, representatives of science, as well as entrepreneurs to contribute to the organization and holding of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science. And also – to try in every way to ensure the principles of equality and exclude any manifestations of gender discrimination in the field of science, to encourage and strive in every possible way to introduce women from an early age to scientific achievements and innovative technologies, guaranteeing them the equal right to participate in this field with men.
