The United Nations Climate Change Conferences are meetings that happen every year as part of the United Nations’ efforts to address climate change. They are formal meetings of the UNFCCC parties (Conference of the Parties, COP) where they talk and agree on ways to deal with climate change, reduce emissions, and stop global warming. The United Nations Climate Change Conferences are the most important meetings about climate change in the world. They bring together people from all over the world to make decisions about how to deal with climate change.
The COP28 UAE meeting will happen from November 30th to December 12th, 2023 at Expo City in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. It will include:The 28th meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP 28) is taking place.
the fifth meeting of the group in charge of the Paris Agreement.
The 18th meeting of the COP that also serves as the Meeting of the Parties to the Kyoto Protocol. The 59th conference of the team that puts plans into action (SBI 59); and the SBSTA 59 is the 59th gathering of experts to talk about science and technology.
On January 13, 2023, the UNFCCC Secretariat said that Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber was chosen to be the President for COP 28. Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber is the Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology and UAE Special Envoy for Climate Change.
The leaders of the COP 27 and COP 28 meetings are talking to governments to get ready for a successful COP 28. They want to make sure that the meeting helps to make the world a better place by reducing emissions and making it stronger against climate change. They also want to encourage ambitious climate action and make sure that plans are put into action with the right support.
The first evaluation of how well the Paris Agreement is being put into action will finish at COP 28. Every five years, the world evaluates how well it’s doing with its climate goals. This process takes two years each time. The first Global Stocktake happens in the middle of putting the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its goals into action, including Goal 13 about climate action. There will be a required workshop about the effects of the GST in October in the UAE.
In a letter sent to groups in July 2023, the new leaders said that COP 28 will focus on four big changes. Rapidly switching to clean energy and reducing emissions before 2030. Changing how money is spent on climate issues, keeping past commitments, and creating a plan for new financial agreements.
Making sure that nature, people, lives, and jobs are the main focus of our efforts to address climate change. Getting ready for the most inclusive COP ever. The letter also explains a plan to fix things by talking it out, making a plan, and asking for help.
