The International Day of Cities was first adopted on 27 December 2013 by the United Nations General Assembly Resolution A/RES/68/239. Thus, it was decided to celebrate this day on October 31, 2014.
It should be noted that since 2014, International Cities Day has been celebrated annually within the framework of the United Nations Programme. This movement is held under the slogan “Better City, Better Life”. The main objective of the International Day is to increase the interest of the world community about global urbanization.
In 2014, an international conference titled “Leading Urban Reform” was held in Shanghai, People’s Republic of China. In parallel, this conference was held in Milan, Italy in 2015, in Quito, Ecuador in 2016, in Guangzhou, People’s Republic of China in 2017, in Liverpool, Great Britain in 2018, in Yekaterinburg, Russian Federation in 2019, and in 2020. It was held in Nakuru, Kenya in 2021, in the Arab Republic of Egypt in 2021, and again in Shanghai, People’s Republic of China in 2022.
