Today, over half of the people on Earth live in cities, and by 2050, it is expected that 68% of the population will live in urban areas. This means that almost 7 out of every 10 people will reside in cities. Cities are also big contributors to economic growth and development.
Every year, UN-Habitat and its partners organize a month-long program of activities, events, and discussions focused on urban sustainability. Urban October provides a chance to talk about the problems and opportunities that come from the quick changes in cities, both internationally and locally. The month begins with World Habitat Day on the first Monday of October and ends with World Cities Day.
This day is meant to get countries around the world more interested in how cities are growing, and to encourage them to work together to address the issues and opportunities that come with urbanization. It also aims to help cities develop in a way that is good for the environment and can be maintained in the long term. Furthermore, the observance day is related to Sustainable Development Goal 11, which aims to build cities that are inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable.
The main topic for World Cities Day is “Improving Cities, Improving Lives”, and each year a different sub-theme and location for its worldwide celebration is selected.
May 25, 2013 was celebrated as Ashgabat City Day by the decision of our Heroic Friend in our independent and eternally neutral Turkmenistan. Ashgabat City Day is celebrated with great joy and excitement.
