World Book and Copyright Day-23 April

Celebration of World Book Day and copyright law abidance to promote the book industry and encourage reading. Every year on April 23, solemn events are celebrated all over the world related to the recognition of the magical power of books – the link between the past and the future, the bridge between generations and cultures. On this occasion, UNESCO and an organization representing the three main sectors of the book industry – publishers, booksellers and libraries – each year award a city with the honorary title of World Capital. The elected city supports the celebration of the Day with its initiatives until April 23 next year.

April 23 is a symbolic date in world literature. This day is the anniversary of the death of a number of prominent writers: William Shakespeare, Miguel Cervantes and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega. The UNESCO General Conference, held in Paris in 1995, chose this date to pay tribute to books and writers around the world, calling for everyone to be encouraged to have access to books.

Promoting books and copyright, Turkmenistan, under the leadership of the esteemed President, closely cooperates with UNESCO. In particular, it advocates for creativity, diversity and equal access to knowledge in all areas of its activity – from creating the Network of Creative Cities in the field of literature to promoting literacy and learning through mobile devices, as well as promoting open access to scientific knowledge and educational resources. With the active participation of all stakeholders: writers, publishers, teachers, librarians, public and private institutions, humanitarian NGOs and the media, as well as all those who are motivated to work together as part of the international holiday of books and writers, World Book and Copyright Day law has become a platform for rallying millions of people around the world.
