Meteorologists from the Balkan region learned advanced information systems for accurate weather forecasting

On April 4-8, 2022, specialists of meteorological stations of Balkan region of the Hydrometeorology Service (Turkmenhydromet) under the Ministry of Agriculture and Environmental Protection of Turkmenistan took part in the five-day training in Ashgabat on advanced meteorological information systems and meteorological radar stations. The training was organized with the support of the USAID Governance Support Program in Turkmenistan (GSP). This is the joint event of the USAID GSP project and Turkmenhydromet from a series of trainings organized for Turkmen meteorologists of the Ashgabat and velayat meteorological stations to increase their knowledge in advanced methods of weather forecasting.

In 2018, the Concept for development of the digital economy for 2019-2025 was approved in Turkmenistan. USAID is working with the Hydrometeorological Service to modernize existing and introduce new advanced weather forecasting technologies. Automated meteorological measurement and information systems (AMIS) and software for their use are examples of such technologies. AMIS automates the collection of meteorological data such as temperature, atmospheric pressure, wind speed, and direction.

The course was conducted in a hybrid format by an international consultant Erkin Isaev (Kyrgyzstan) and local consultant Vitaly Shlyapnikov (Turkmenistan). In addition to the presentations of USAID consultants, the participants of the training had the opportunity to discuss and exchange experiences with each other, as well as to get answers to their questions from consultants.

There are 12 meteorological stations in Balkan velayat, namely: “Garabogaz”, “Guwlymayak”, “Çagyl”, “Awaza”, “Hazar”, “Balkanabat”, “Bereket”, “Bugdayly”, “Esenguly”, “Etrek”, “Magtymguly”, “Serdar”. All of them are equipped with modern equipment from the Belarussian company “Peleng”, which provides an opportunity to receive accurate data, quickly form and send it on time for processing to the technical center of Turkmenhydromet.

A participant of the training, the Head of the automatic meteorological station “Balkanabat” Rejepgeldy Khydyrov noted: “Our trainers provided us with a lot of useful information and revealed some technical tricks used to operate meteorological sensors and radars. The knowledge we gained would help us to use our equipment more effectively and collect detailed data on precipitation, wind speed, wind direction, and many other synoptic factors to make accurate weather forecasts. “

One day of this training course was devoted to a practical exercise. The participants of the training visited the oldest meteorological station in Bekreve and had the opportunity to exchange views with their colleagues from the Akhal velayat. In total, 10 specialists of Turkmenhydromet from Balkan velayat, as well as one specialist from Ashgabat and one from Bekreve meteorological stations have participated in the training. The joint efforts of USAID and Turkmen meteorologists will continue contributing to the successful implementation of Turkmenistan’s state programs in the field of strengthening the capacity of civil servants and providing them with quality services to organizations and the population of the country. The next training course will be organized for meteorologists from Dashoguz and Mary in August this year.
