World Poetry Day

“Poetry is also a unique art form that stimulates receptivity to the incredible diversity of languages and cultures characteristic of the human race. Poetry brings man closer to the world. It introduces us to such concepts as dissimilarity, dialogue and peace. It is a testament to the universality of human existence beyond the myriad means used to describe it.”

Celebrated annually on March 21, World Poetry Day celebrates one of the most valuable forms of cultural and linguistic expression and identity. Throughout history, poetry has been an integral part of society. It can be found in every culture and on every continent. Poetry is an expression of our shared humanity and shared values, turning the simplest of poems into a powerful catalyst for dialogue and peace.

UNESCO proclaimed 21 March as World Poetry Day during the 30th General Conference in Paris in 1999 to promote linguistic diversity through poetic expression and to enable endangered languages to be heard. World Poetry Day is an occasion to honor poets, to revive the oral tradition of poetry readings, to increase interest in reading, writing and teaching poetry, to promote rapprochement between poetry and other arts such as theatre, dance, music and painting, and to provide a wider media coverage of poetry. Poetry continues to unite people from all continents. Join the celebration!
