Representation of women in the judiciary is a key factor in ensuring that the courts represent their citizens, take their interests into account and make informed decisions. The mere presence of female judges enhances the legitimacy of the courts by demonstrating that the courts are open and accessible to all those who are seeking an opportunity to seek justice.
The appearance of female judges in the courts was a positive step towards making the judiciary more transparent, inclusive and representative of the people they affect.
Gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls, Sustainable Development Goal 5, is critical to achieving progress across the Goals and to mainstreaming a gender perspective into the implementation of the 2030 Agenda.
In particular, the representation of women in the judiciary is important for many reasons. In addition to ensuring that the legal system develops in the interests of the whole society, it also inspires the next generation of women judges and motivates them to achieve their goals.
Although there has historically been a lack of equality in the judiciary, steps are being taken to rectify the situation, as evidenced by the UN General Assembly’s designation of March 10 as International Day of Women Judges. The General Assembly resolution prepared by Qatar is tangible evidence of a positive shift.
Addressing gender inequality is also at the heart of UNODC’s strategy for gender equality and the empowerment of women and is a goal shared by the Global Doha Implementation Program as it works to promote a culture of lawfulness around the world by providing training and supporting meaningful participation. women in every professional field.
Only through the active participation of women, on an equal footing with men, at all levels of decision-making, can we achieve sustainable development, peace and democracy.
