The aim of the seminar was to provide proposals for improving the process of a trademark registration in the country in accordance with the international standards, which will contribute to the wide recognition of Turkmenistan’s products in the local and foreign markets and will accelerate the country’s efforts on developing the effective trade policies.
The event gathered the representatives of the line ministries of Turkmenistan, including the Ministry of Trade and Foreign Economic Relations, State Service for Intellectual Property of the Ministry of Finance and Economy, State Commodity and Raw Materials Exchange, Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and the Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs of Turkmenistan.

The event participants got familiarized with the current national practices on trademarks’ registration and discussed the ways of improving the system of registration in compliance with the international practices.
“The national legal framework should provide a basis for the registration and enforcement of a trademark. The registration procedures should be simple, transparent, impartial, and cost-effective. It is important for the states to be a party to a number of international agreements that stipulate the common procedures and protocols for harmonizing the national trademark law and practices” – noted Ms. Linda Mazure, UNDP international consultant.
In the course of the meeting, Ms. Mazure made a presentation on the international best practices and legal frameworks, talked about the advantages of an online trademarks register and importance of the capacity building of the national patent attorneys to improve the trademark registration practices in Turkmenistan.
