According to the official data of the state news agency of Turkmenistan, President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, who arrived in the Azerbaijani capital on 25/10/2019 to attend the XVIII Summit of the Non-Aligned Movement, met with President Ilham Aliyev at the Baku Congress Center today.
During the meeting, the Presidents of the two countries exchanged views on the prospects for cooperation between Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan, and identified priority areas for adding up efforts. Fuel and energy complex taking into account the resource potential of the two countries and the transport segment were designated as priority areas of interstate dialogue. Mutual interest in strengthening friendly ties and diversification of trade and economic cooperation was emphasized.
President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, speaking at the XVIII Summit of the Non-Aligned Movement in Baku, called countering international terrorism the most important task in the framework of ensuring global security. In continuation, he said that Turkmenistan, supporting the efforts of the international community to create effective international mechanisms to combat this threat, advocates the full implementation of the UN Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy.
For reference, the Non-Aligned Movement was formally established at the Belgrade Conference in September 1961. Since May 2011, it has 120 states, including 1 European – Belarus, 37 Asian, 53 African, 26 American, 3 oceanic. The summit of countries participating in the Non-Aligned Movement is held every 3-5 years. Turkmenistan joined the Movement in the symbolic 1995, when it got international recognition of the status of a neutral state. From the CIS countries members are Azerbaijan, Belarus, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. Some other CIS countries: Armenia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Ukraine are members of the Non-Aligned Movement as the observers. From the countries of the post-Soviet space, for the first time in the history of the Movement, Azerbaijan assumed the chairmanship of the Non-Aligned Movement in 2019-2022 and held the XVIII Summit of the member countries in Baku.
